If the flash bulb has a truly long burn time then I agree... I don't see
why auto mode shouldn't work. If you have guide numbers (which are
probably dependent on the reflector used) then I'd use them to set the
aperture and an (assumed) shutter speed. Let the camera control the
shutter speed in auto mode but make sure the guide number says that the
aperture chosen will allow a shutter speed that's within a range that
the camera can handle.
