Nor is he sure how he processed it, but it's generally easy to adjust for low
contrast. It helps to shoot RAW, so you
have lots of luminance values to stretch out. The next image in that little
gallery is a full pixel sample.

I adjust differently for this kind of low contrast than does Piers. I generally
use LCE first, as edge contrast is low.
That usually perks things up a lot and spreads the top and bottom. Then Levels
to pull top and bottom out to the ends,
if needed, and Curves to adjust contrast by eye.
Here's another, full frame.

On APS, it's the eq. of 960 mm

Here's a 100 mm eq. setting shot.

With good subjects like those three, a mirror lens is great. With individual
highlights far from the focal plane, it
gets more troublesome.

In other circumstances, the OOF background areas can range from slightly odd to
almost surreal. This image shows a nice
range of depth and various looks.

I would expect the Zuiko 500/8 to give pretty similar results, with better
contrast before PP and slightly less detail
resolved. The Sigma tested with slightly higher center resolution. That,
together with the 20% greater focal length,
mean the Sigma should resolve more detail from the same subject area. BTW, the
Sigma has very nice build quality, better
than the Tamrons I've had.
I've not had much trouble with focusing 350/5.6, 500/8 and 600/8 mirrors, even
on the tunnel viewfinder 300D, but my
vision is unusually good. With the Meade 1000/11 on OM, it's definitely easier
with the appropriate tele viewscreens.
Haven't tried it on digital.
