I recently bought a Samsung WB650 afer Moose sung its praises here not
long ago. The WB650 has an amazingly long zoom going from 24-360mm
equivalent. The long zoom was attractive since, apart from a 500mm
f/5.6 mirror lens, I don't have any other lens that exceeds that focal
length or even comes close. My Canon AF lenses top out at 200mm and my
OM Zuikos top out with the 85-250/5.
Since my walkaround lens choice for the 5D is a Tamron 24-135 I wondered
how much coverage I might be giving up by not having easy access to a
longer lens. After shooting the first couple of hundred images with the
WB650 I decided to check the equivalent focal lengths I used. I
discovered that 90% were between 24 and 120mm. The rest tended to be
from 150mm on up with the max at 330mm. So, I have new confidence that
my 24-135 is a good choice for the 5D.
This is a significant change from my photography of many years ago. In
the 1980s I would often walk around with my OM-1 or OM-2s with the 200/4
as my only lens. (but my only other choice then was a 50/1.4)
