You raise a number of interesting issues, Bob.
Firstly, a gentleman never drops anything in his whisky save for a trickle
of water - nor does he allow his butler to even think about such a crime.
Secondly, only whisky distilled in Scotland is called Scotch whisky, and
then only after a minimum of three years in cask (but you would be hard put
to find anything younger than 8).
Thirdly, our Irish cousins produce a vaguely similar beverage with spelling
reminiscent of the real thing - that does have "e" in the name. Bourbon
follows the Irish spelling. Suntory etc - I honestly don't know.
Fourthly, only whisky is termed "Scotch" - in other contexts the appropriate
adjective is "Scottish".
Mine is (currently) a Lagavulin, although Laphroaig, Talisker, Balvenie,
Highland Park have all been favoured tipples of late. I must get around to
sampling the produce of some of the four distilleries I can see from my desk
:-) When are you coming over?
Piers

I thought only whisky distilled in Scotland was allowed to drop the "e" in
whiskey.
