It didn't used to require a road trip. In the late 60's when I first
started working for IBM in Endicott, NY it only required walking across
North St. at lunch time to visit Bunk's Lunch (only open from 11am -
2pm). The buns were buttered and the dogs split down the middle and
both put on the grill until browned. Then dog and bun were married and
a big scoop of chili (no beans, of course) was laid on from the pot that
was bubbling at the side of the grill. My mouth waters just thinking of it.
Now that I'm back in the area some 40 years later Bunk's Lunch is long
gone. Even the building has been replaced with another. There must be
a place that serves chili dogs nearby but so far I haven't found it.
It's probably why IBM declined in the '80s. But there must be another
Bunk's Lunch somewhere in another city or two. IBM is doing well these
days. :-)
