There should be no need of tapping the metal strip. 1/4" (6.35, call it
7mm) through holes should be all that are required. Pass the tripod
screw up through the strip and attach with a 1/4-20 nut.
Alternatively, and much better, I think Olafo purchased these flash
umbrella adapters

I had suggested previously that one end of the mounting strip be
gripped in the mini-vice on top which is designed to hold the sides of a
flash foot. No holes needed on that end, threaded or otherwise although
the metal strip might need to have its edges tapered to fit the vice.
The other end of the strip does need a 1/4" through hole to mount the
T20 autoconnectors which have a standard 1/4-20 tripod thread. Readily
available screws from the hardware store won't be precisely the correct
length so will need some washers fitted to prevent the screw from
bottoming out in the T20 connector as illustrated here
