And with only less than 5% of the size of the drive available as free space (Bob's actual case) the analogy still holds for Apple as well as Winders. Neither OS can prevent fragmentation with resources that small. Both Apple's HFS Plus and Windows' NTFS files systems are modern B-tree, journaling file systems. NTFS is actually a synthesis of the ideas contained in OS/2's HPFS files system and DEC's VAX VMS. Windows has lots of deficiencies but design of the file system is not one of them.
