WHOM is the sound that an Aston makes as it goes past you at speed..
I know this because I drove from Rouen to Le Mans two days before a
classic weekend.
In July. It was quite an experience.
I saw cars I have never seen before, or hardly ever.
Coming over from the UK for the big weekend.
At one point I passed two Jag 'D' types.
And one of those huge 1930's Mercedes silver racers (on the back of a
truck of course).
And Lotus 7's everywhere. More MG's than flies.
Boxed in at one point by a DB9, a DB7 and a Vantage.
And a classic Porsche Le Mans tea tray or two.
They were taking it easy but I got overexcited.
There's a long, straight slightly downhill section of Autoroute just
before Le Mans.
I made a discovery.
A Vauxhall Astra WILL do 200km/hr.
Only just and it begins to overheat quite quickly.
Had to throttle back to 180 or so.
And that's a '96 with the smaller 1.4L engine.
The speed limit is 130km.
I've been a bad boy.
I had a moment of clarity - the point when I thought, "This is a 14yo
car and if anything breaks now, absolutely anything, including me, I'm
dead."
That should cover the car conversations for a bit.
