They haven't actually replaced the wheels yet. They have to order them
but will do so.
I rotate the tires for exactly the opposite reason that you don't rotate
them. I do want to replace all four at the same time. I consider it
important for handling and braking safety that all four tires be the
same brand and type and have even tread wear.
Furthermore, if I were to get 60,000 miles on a set (as I have come to
expect), with my reduced annual mileage after retirement and moving out
of the Boston area, the tires may very well "age out" by turning brittle
before reaching their mileage potential. The '99 Chrysler LHS (my
favorite) is now our local driving car and only gets about 6,000
miles/year now... down from 12-15,000. The Buick is our over the road
car for long distance traveling and only gets local driving when we're
in Florida for the winter. It's averaging around 9,000 miles/year so
even its tires could possibly "age out" before the tread is gone.
If I was smarter I'd probably cut down to one car as both are rarely
used at the same time. But I'm not sure how my wife would take to that.
Well, considering that, maybe does make me the smarter man. :-)
