The difference in area between a 4/3 image and > 35mm image is more than that between a 35 size image and a 645 image. But the world of digital has changed this equation. It is true that larger sensors typically allow larger photosites which don't push the lenses quite as hard. Larger photosites typically have better dynamic range capabilities. But none of this means squat if the lenses for either format have maxed out the sensors and the images are shot at minimum ISO. I believe that Joel has more than one picture from his substandard cameras when blown up to 30x40 would be more than satisfactory to the task. I can think of one or two of his pictures I wouldn't mind having hanging on my walls--even though they were taken with crud sensors. But what do I know. One of my prized photographs (banned from general living quarters) is pinhole picture taken with the E-1 from Bill Barber.
