Mosquitos usually respond to deet repellents, but the black flies do
not. Up in the UP, they grow those flies big enough to carry off small
pets and children. Nothing short of a fifty mile per hour wind will
help with those things. That is why we do our photo trips up there in
the fall.

You basically have two choices--snow or bugs. Take your pick.  But no
poisonous snakes that I know of.
