"Nice to see HP get Palm, just maybe that OS will see a revival of
sorts. Don't tell anybody, but my Palm Centro (which isn't even the
latest WebOS version) does a lot of things the iPhones/iPods/iPads
don't. At least with my Centro, I can send Alt-Codes."
I hope not too little too late. Droids and all the apps seem to be
taking off. One other advantage of the Pre and is that the whole old
phone can be run in emulation till any app you have and other stuff is
ported properly or if you just like it. The PIM is good (should be
given Palm's history). One major gripe in people who travel to GSM
areas and want to use VZW as the carrier there is no clear way to make
VOIP on wifi. I would already have one if that were the case. Don't
want to pay the tremendous roaming fees with one of their phones witha
GSM chip..
Skype was taking a wait and see attitude before porting to WebOS. Palm
stock was taking a nose dive---good thing HP bought them, though may
just delay the demise.
(Hope I'm wrong.) There is no SIP server that will work as there is no
API for the microphone. People have succeeded in dialing a number but
no mic is a bit of a problem. Voxofone may port their app to the Pre
using wifi but that could be many moons. One has to make a local call
to an access number now--bit of a problem with a CDMA phone in Europe.
Perhaps others here more knowledgeable about this stuff may have an
answer.
Seems SipDroid 1.1.8 beta using Gizmo5 on Motorola Droid may work ---
put it in airplane mode, then turn on WiFi and likely can make VoIP
calls. If no progress soon, hello Droid.
