Interesting.Way back when, one major reason I opted for a 300D instead
of an E-1 for my first DSLR was the poor performance of the 50-200. I
was able to try out both cameras side-by-side. The E-1/50-200 at the
long end wasn't bad in bright light, but get it into even slightly dim
light and it slowed down considerably. In dimmer light, even with
strongly contrasting subject matter, it was very slow or didn't focus at
all without multiple tries.
The 300D with comparable lens was very fast in good light, only slightly
slower in slightly dim light and still OK in light where the Oly failed.
I REALLY wanted the Oly to be my camera, but I'm always finding myself
shooting in dim light at sunset, in fog or cloudy conditions, in
museums, in aquaria, in the woods, etc. The higher noise at higher ISOs
and the poor low light performance of the 50-200 meant it couldn't
compete for my use.
Had Oly had the right lens focus technology, I might be an OLY DSLR user
today. Too late now, unless they unleash something amazing. I like FF
and have a fair investment in lenses and accessories.
