My 80GB WD drive requires use of the "safely remove hardware" routine, so I 
went through your suggested route, and found that it was already set to 
"optimize for quick removal".  It normally tells me that I cannot safely 
remove the drive when I try it the first time.  If I wait a while and try 
again, it works fine.

I once tried two quick attempts, and ended up with some corrupted files.
