One big difference is that Olympus and Maitani probably had a
fairly comprehensive vision for the OM system worked out
before the first production line started up.
By the 1970's other camera makers such as Nikon and Pentax had
already worked out pretty complete visions of what a 35mm SLR
system should be. Olympus had the opportunity to redraw a
system starting with a blank sheet. Fortunately Maitani had
the talent to come up with an outstanding vision, and the
ability to see it executed.
In the present era there is no clear vision of what a digital
camera system should be. Everyone - not just Olympus - is
winging it. Olympus has been more experimental with its
system camera designs so far, but in that experimentation, has
wandered into several cul-de-sacs already.
