I clicked on the tracking button this morning. It said delivered at
10:24. The PC clock said 10:25. So I headed for the front door, heard
the bell ring, opened the door and picked it up. Ordered at ~ 03:20
Sunday morning, delivered 55 hours later - for free!
First impressions while the battery was charging. I like the looks and
build quality. The knobs for ISO and EV are terrific. The hot shoe WILL
catch on pockets, etc. LensMate sells a fancy little filler for it - for
$10! Fortunately, I bought some of the OM ones long ago, and one of
those works fine.
I suppose it's part of the G series tradition, but I don't "get" the
double strap lugs and big strap. I cannibalized a wrist strap from an
old Oly Stylus, and it's perfect. Two Oly accessories on it now. :-)
The wider lens means a new bayonet mount for the accessory lens tube -
bummer. There's another $50 to LensMate.
The G11 turns out to weigh just 10 g. more than the A650, no practical
difference. The battery difference means a much different grip and
weight distribution.Wrist strap really a must, where I often jst leave
it dangling on the A650.
Battery ready. Take three test still lifes before realizing I haven't
set it to RAW. Hmmm, ISO 200 RAW really does look cleaner than ISO 80 on
the A650 - Excellent!
Rather than take a bunch of silly shots around house and yard, I
convince my lazy self to get out and take my first real shots in a
pretty place with a lot of variety in subjects and light.
VERY much unlike myself, I've allowed images to go on the web with no
real processing. Here's a sampling just as they come, JPEGs right out of
the camera, run through PTLens as a batch, batch resized by FastStone
and tossed up on the web. <http://www.moosemystic.net/Gallery/MPhotos/G11/>
I put it up with JAlbum, so there is a slide show available for a casual
overview. Many won't make the cut. The light was often very high
brightness range, a real test for a small sensor, and you can see many
will require highlight recovery in RAW processing. I thought it would be
worthwhile to show how it works with everything but EV at default.
I only wanted a longer lens once. :-)
