Your treatise on building your "wedding kit" by adding a Panasonic body
and the 50mm f/1.4 to your E-1 and 14-54 struck me as rather strange.
So I decided to look over the 4/3 offerings more closely than I have so
far to see how I would build a "wedding kit" from scratch.
My 5D and Tokina 28-80/2.8 were acquired specifically for shooting
weddings and other events. I had plenty of advice from my photo mentor
ahead of time that the main lens needed to cover moderate wide angle to
moderate telephoto, be moderately fast (mainly for low light focusing)
and also constant aperture. The constant aperture requirement comes
about from shooting in manual mode most of the time. You don't want the
lens changing aperture on you as you zoom.
I had assumed up front that the 14-54 met that requirement but guess I
had really never noticed before that it ranged from 2.8-3.5 and was not
constant aperture. So I looked more closely at the Zuiko 4/3 line and
discovered that the only constant aperture zooms were the 14-35 and
35-100 f/2.0 optics. Very nice and fast but with price tags of $1850
and $2050... about 5 times the price of my Tokina 28-80/2.8
I then decided to look at non-Zuiko 4/3 lenses where I discovered the
Sigma 18-50/2.8. At $419 I thought that was the solution until I
realized that this lens was also used on all the other cameras with
APS-C size sensors. It was designed as the 28-80 equivalent for those
cameras but is acutally the equivalent of 36-100 on 4/3. Probably
workable but a bit narrow on the wide end for large group shots.
And that's where I threw in the towel; when I realized there was no
reasonably priced equivalent to my 28-80, constant aperture 2.8
available for 4/3 cameras. I don't think I'd have chosen your path but
it was clear that something less conventional was needed.
