Brian,
I would suggest that you simplify a bit. It sounds like all of the
automation may well be confusing the issue(s). I would suggest the
following, at least until you get used to the camera:
1. Take Chucks suggestion and set white balance to Daylight for most
shots, particularly outdoors.
2. Set autofocus AF MODE to S-AF
3. Set meter to averaging .
You now have essentially an autofocus OM-2. If you have a tricky
lighting situation switch to spot, meter a 'middle tone' in the scene
and lock the exposure then trip the shutter - now you have more or less
an autofocus OM-4 (no multi spot though)
