Most children here are hospital births, now, but you can opt for a home
birth. They don't encourage it, though. I was a home birth (1956).
This was a few days after birth, when the dad was back onshore and mum
had been discharged. There had been a few false starts, during one of
which I was referred to as 'Mr Niven', as if I was the dad! I was the
only male available when mum went into labour...
Only doctor available was the ship's quack, in no fit state, as I
recall. But the mother is Egyptian, and she has a lot of experience...
