Wrotniak has phrased it well. Fuji and Olympus figured they could make
a killing by doing their own "standard" and selling their own cheap to
produce but grossly inferior design. I'm not sure what they could have
been thinking since the design of the CF card with integrated controller
follows from years of PC usage of the same design on hard disks which
was in turn taken from the design of the I/O channel controllers of the
IBM 360 dating back to the mid-60s. Had the had any sense of this
history they'd have realized that the long term impact on the camera's
functionality and customer's satisfaction could only be bad.
Some managers in Olympus and Fuji should be required to commit hara-kiri
with a sharpened xD card tied to a bamboo stick. :-)
