I have used colourvision (now datacolour?) spyder pro 2 (not the new
faster version 3) and have been happy with it on both CRT and LCD
screens. It has a useful validation feature and shows graphs for RGB
target. measured and the correction applied. Which makes it useful for
comparing monitors.
