Nothing new. Thieves have been with us since time began. During
recessions, certain types of crime increase while other decrease. But crimes
against fellow humanoids is normal fare.
Some may also blame population density. Bill is around Houston, which is
the 4th largest city in the USA--depending on how you measure it, possibly
#2, but Texans are sure it's #1. I don't blame population density as a
causation of crime. Crime occurs in thin population areas too. If 5% of
the population are thieves, one out of 20 people will think nothing of
scabbing off with your stuff whether you live in the country or the city.
Drugs? Trust me, drugs happen in rural areas too....
Economic depression causing people to turn to crime? Nice in theory, but
doubtful that you can find much of any REAL research and data to back that
up.
