My first 35mm camera was a Practica FX which was bought for me
wholesale in 1957 for 40 (45?) pounds by the staff photographer of the NZ
Forest Service who I was gopher for, while part-time at University in
Wellington. New 35mm cameras were very expensive for a student on 12
pounds a fortnight..
I really treasured that camera; it was stolen from my room in College in the
UK, around 1963. The loss soured me from photography for many years,
and the purchase of a non-interchangeable lens Contaflex on the ship back
to NZ didn't really fix that.
The acquisition of an Exakta around 1978 started me going again in
earnest.
The non-prism finder and using the magnifying glass never really bothered
me; so much better than my previous camera - a Kershaw Penguin.
Brian Swale.
