My method is to wait till I see anything start to flash and instantly (as
fast as I can) press the shutter release. A lot of lightning is cascading
in this the initial spark will trigger additional sparks. To capture those
across-the-sky forking lightning displays, you'll need up to a couple
seconds as it takes a while for it to go across.

Otherwise, for a city-scape style lightning photograph, the classic approach
to this is to shoot from a long ways off with a big lens, slow film, stopped
down and long exposures.
