Without a lightning detector (plans and a circuit board for which were
presented on this list many years ago by Bill Brooks) I think you're
limited to exactly what you've said. Point it on auto in the vicinity
of active lightning strokes and hope you catch something.
I have a copy somewhere. Perhaps someone knows if it's still available
on line. Maybe Scott Gomez?
