I couldn't find the ill reviews you were talking about but I note that
the Olympus FL-CB05 as listed at B&H seems to have fine reviews.

To the best of my knowledge the Canon cable will work with Olympus but
not the other way around. The Canon cable has 4 control contacts to
Oly's 3 but I believe they all line up... but the Canon would be missing
a contact if on the Oly cable. The Canon cable is more expensive than
the Oly cable and is now in its 3rd version and supposedly has been made
more rugged than version 2. I have version 2 and have never had any
problem with it. Canon version 2 cables can be found on ebay. There is
no intelligence in the cables. They're simply electrical contacts and
don't care what's being transmitted on the wire between flash and camera.
