It seems that about 50% of women are "tetrachromat-ready", that is, their
retinas already have FOUR types of cones, but only around 2-3% are able to
perceive/discern the additional range of hues -- imagine the CIE1931 colour
space with another dimension! Maybe a new opportunity for metamerism...
OTOH, this may be the scientific background for men's inability to discern
more than 16 colours -- "Melon is a fruit, not a colour" ;-) ;-) ;-)
