Hmm,
From an endocrine vantage point seems like an interesting association
but easily could be an epiphenomenon. Diabetics (DM known risk factor
for hearing loss), low renin hypertension or just a high sodium intake
will decrease aldo levels. Aldosterone helped enable us to emerge form
the swamp onto dry land (perhaps not the Nikonians) with it's sodium
retentive effects, but reducing it's production protects the kidneys
from damage in DM, hypertension and blocking it's effects improves
longevity in congestive heat failure.
