For the past several years on Memorial Day weekend we venture northward
to the vicinity of Glen's Falls**, New York to visit with friends who
have a very large extended family. My task, apart from eating all the
wonderful goodies they prepare for a big family/neighborhood picnic, is
to do group portraits of the extended family. Parents, children and
grandchildren now number about 25. Since it's such a big affair the
preparation is a lot of work. Consequently, my wife and I go early to
help out.
But all is not work and our friends have a beautiful garden in the back
yard. Before all the family and friends arrived I got a chance to
wander the garden and took a few shots of flowers and lawn with my
favorite being the orange poppies. I hadn't realized my 80-200/2.8
Tokina had such nice bokeh at 200mm. Also, the first shot is a first
for me. A hungry Pileated Woodpecker who was knocking finger size
chunks of wood out of an old, dead pine tree. It took a while but I
eventually got close enough to him for a decent shot at 200mm.

** For you James Fennimore Cooper fans, Glen's Falls is near the
headwaters of the Hudson River and the waterfalls there are the location
from "The Last of the Mohicans" where Natty Bumppo and friends are
hiding from the Hurons after escaping a massacre. There is indeed a
cave under the falls which is now known as "Cooper's Cave". And, of
course, there is a local craft brewery there by the same name where we
picked up the beer and a trailer load of ice. :-)
