Sorry, Brian. I had not considered the problem of dial-up.
But I should have thought that a script-driven gallery system would
automatically put Forward and Back links into each page, using html
rather than javascript.
I have gallery pages which I think are html and css without javascript
(www.threeshoes.biz). You could try them and see if the loading speed
is bad.
My site needs updating, by the way ...
