Every Leica owner I've ever known has one solitary lens that they consider
one of the crown jewels. Just knowing they have this one lens with an M-body
of choice seems to be enough. They can justify the Voigtlander lenses
because they really are decent lenses, but just having one Leica lens is
considered enough for right-of-passage.
Ken Rockwell's "Leicaman" http://kenrockwell.com/leica/leica-man.htm is, of
course, an exception to all this. (Like him or hate him, Rockwell is an
example of a blind nut finding a squirrel once in a while).
Rocky and I tend to think somewhat alike these days. Why spend big money
(anything over $100 for me) on something which will be outdated and
"disposable" in less than a year. People grouse about how expensive luxury
cameras, like the Leica, are, but then go and spend as much every 24 months
on new second/third-tier digitals and lenses. Just the cost of one
"Photoshop Upgrade" can go a long way towards picking up a used Leica lens.
And best of all, historically, Leica cameras and lenses do not depreciate.
They really are a decent investment just from an investment perspective.
Personally, I've been more a fan of the (o)M mount than the M mount, but a
person could be tempted, very tempted. In all honesty, I'd rather have a
decent M body with one solitary Leica lens (probably the lowly 35/2.8 or
28/2.8) than the latest greatest digital wonderbrick.
Technically speaking, 35mm film is gutwrench dark-ages stuff, but
artistically speaking, I'm seeing much more interesting and desirable images
coming from people shooting Leicas than any other camera.
