You will most likely pass about 250 km south of Niagara Falls.  Enjoy 
your trip but don't take Las Vegas as anything like the rest of the US. 
  It is unlike any other city in the US.  Also, smoking is allowed in 
most (if not all) casinos.  And there is a lot of it.  That's unlike 
most places in the US today.

But perhaps you'll plan a side trip to Hoover Dam.  Recommended.

less expensive tour is probably adequate.  Hoover Dam is about 50km from 
Las Vegas on mostly fast highway.  You have to pass through the suburban 
areas of Las Vegas and Henderson (where my father lives).  There are 
still lots of casinos in Henderson but it looks more typical (at least 
of desert living) than the Las Vegas strip.

When you get tired of casinos and lights and need to do a little 
landscape photography go west about 30 km to Red Rock Canyon.
