I tend to agree that 12 is as many megapixels as almost anyone needs,
especially if Olympus is going to exert more energy on such items as
Dynamic Range, color fidelity, etc. Actually, 12 is probably too many
for most uses and users.
As a matter of curiosity, I went back to my unconscionably complex
spreadsheets from last season, and discovered that my two best selling
photos of 2008 were from low mp cameras. The best seller was taken
with the E-1 in 2006, and #2 was taken with a C-5060 is 2004. Next in
line came a shot with the E-510. Images from the Nykon D3 are nowhere
near the top of the heap, sales wise, but then I've had it just a
little more than a year. (Not to mention it's a 12.1mp camera. <g>)
And one or two D3 images are starting to creep up the list.
My initial reason for buying the D3, however, was a demand by
customers for bigger prints, but with the current economic
unpleasantness, such desires are likely to be placed on hold for a
while. Truth is, if I weren't as subject to the gee-whiz factor as the
next fellow, I likely could do everything I need to do with the E-
System with room (and money) left over.
I suspect the D3 will do me for quite some time to come, as it seems
to make more sense to me to concentrate on acquiring good glass rather
than more digital bodies. I even managed to read a review of the new
D3x without more than a twinge of "Iwanna!" My switch is made and
there's no going back now, but for anyone in doubt, or considering
making a switch, I'd say unless your needs are very specific and
economically justifiable, Olympus gives as good as you'll ever need.
As always, advice worth what you paid for it.
