72 ppi is a number from old Apple displays long since gone the way of the dodo bird. Most modern displays are in the 90-100 ppi range. If you display an 800 pixel wide image it should take up 800 pixels. The pixel pitch is irrelevant unless you want to force a particular physical dimension on the screen.
