The objectives aren't big enough to make them excellent for birding.
It's that optics theory rule thingie about absolute resolution limits
for a given objective/FE diameter. At the price, the prisms probably
aren't phase coated, either.
Great for general use and spectacular for close-up/macro. As Dean said,
it's sort of like having a portable stereo microscope with really long
working distance.
The B&L 8x40 Waterproof Elites still rule for birds around here, but are
much bigger and heavier and 'only' focus down to 6 ft. I'm not sure why
I care, though. Carol is the one with the binocs most of the time. If
she points something out, I zoom out to 300mm to look. If it looks
interesting, I take a shot. I can then see much more later on screen if
I want to. Shots that don't make it as images to display still tend to
be better for bird IDs than my memory of a fleeting view through
binoculars. Holding up the bird books(s) next to the screen works well
for this sloppy amateur sometime birder.
