I suspect that the ultimate intervalometer camera for many such projects
is a Canon Powershot with the CHDK add-on firmware. They not only have
complete, programmable (uBASIC language) intervalometer control beyond
any other cameras, they can be programmed to respond in various ways to
events within the whole or a defined part of the image frame.
Also interesting things like super fast shutter speeds ~ 1/60,000 sec.,
super long exposures, focus bracketing for super DOF, exposure
bracketing for HDR, and so on and on.
Given the rapid depreciation of these cameras, one could pick up an
older model for a song for any such special project.
