John:
Others still resident in the UK may wish to chime in. As far as I am
aware, you can have, for example, your initials with a number (e.g, MW
1) or smilar. I presume that you could also have just letters, with or
without spaces. These are not contractions, though they are in the
format or early number plates (e.g., pre-war). I suspect that
"personalized" would have different meanings in the UK and in North
America.

The personalized auto plates in the UK are just contractions or
expansions of the standard alpha numerics. At lot of years I saw "
ERNIE" running around to the west of Edinburgh. This is just a
contraction of ERN 1E which was a regular plate issued in 1966 or
thereabouts. I believe the plate was owned by Ernie Wise, the tv
comedian.
An example of truly personalized plate is " IPASGAS" which I saw in
Calgary, Alberta years ago ............ believed to be owned by someone
in the natural gas industry. Another example is " GR8MUM" which my wife
has had for years ............... a play on "great Mum" ................
and was a birthday or Mothers' Day present from our children.
The shortest personalized plate I have seen is the letter " X " on an
Alberta plate dating back to the mid early 1990s.
In point of fact, the UK does not have personalized plates, just a
tolerance for having licence plate manufacturers issuing plates with
contractions or expansions, but not re-arrangements, of state issued
alpha-numeric registration characters.
If this is not the case, tell me which registration authority can issue
GR8MUM or IPASGAS or X in the UK ?
