I agree. B is the Portra scan and A is from the E-510 and 14-54.
Ignoring Nathan's practical comments about which picture the mothers
will prefer and dealing only with technical image quality issues:
A is to be preferred for sharpness and saturation. I think B is
undersaturated relative to the original scene but nevertheless probably
closer to the original... which is what Portra NC attempts to do. A
(the 14-54) still shows some distortion not shown by the 50mm Mamiya
(see image A at 100%, shape of the heads of the group of children in the
foreground). The 50mm did a better job in that respect but PTLens could
probably improve the 14-54 shot with a proper profile. B is not only
undersaturated but under sharpened. The image improves considerably
after applying some LCE and more sharpening. I think the Portra shot
could be made to at least equal the 510 shot (if not surpass it) with an
improved scan (on the same scanner) and post processing.
But it does make you wonder why one would haul around an RB-67 and go to
all this labor and expense when (for modest size prints at least) one
gets a very good result nearly straight out of the 510 and at far lower
cost.
