It sounds technically possible. Why anyone would do so remains a mystery
to me, as I believe AF to be more accurate than a mechanical rangefinder.
Perhaps the easiest solution would be akin to what Oly did for late
versions of the Olympus Six MF camera. They made a new top plate for the
existing bodies that incorporated an uncoupled rangefinder. When they
ran out of the old bodies, they slightly modified the top plate of new
production, but kept the same concept.
How about a nice ordinary digicam with AF with an enlarged top plate to
house a mechanical view/rangefinder. The viewfinder would work to frame
shots, but the rangefinder would be entirely unrelated to the actual AF
focusing. One could even add a nice non-functional distance scale around
the lens mount to be set from the rangefinder readout.
