If you have some scripting skills, I vote for ImageMagick. A little
harder to learn up front, but VERY powerful. However, it is command line
driven (which may, or may not, be a good thing, depending on your views
:) ).
I found it was very easy to resize a handful of images such that the
longest side was a maximum of 800 pixels. To batch process you will need
to be able to write a loop int he command-line language of your OS.
It's available for *N*X, Mac & Windoze...
