The pagan sophisticates of Europe and most of the rest of the world 
think that calling paper by its actual size, in whatever units, is less 
cool than giving it meaningless shortcut names. Notice that all the 
supposed rationality of the metric system gives rise to completely 
random seeming sizes in this case.

Ratios of long side to  short side:

4/3 sensor     1.33
A4             1.41
FF, APS-C&N    1.50
8x10           1.25

AG's position for 8x10 ratio that both sensor formats use full height 
and 3:2 just crops/wastes more width changes with A4, where 4/3 crops 
some height and 3:2 crops less width.

None of this answers what to do with the 8.5x11" paper I get. :-)
