What I was shooting wasn't a tiny thing... a bit of branch from a tree. It was about 18" (45cm) long and maybe 1/3 that in depth. But the DOF at the shooting distance for the 90mm macro at f/8 was only a couple of inches. If all else fails I'll just give up and shoot it at f/22. But even that is pretty tight on DOF.
