Yeah, I've been reading a few threads like this on dpreview as well.
I went back and checked some visual targets I'd taken pictures of with
the new E-3 for testing purposes, and in my case at least, focus appears
to be bang-on with the new 12-60mm. The one problem with this lens is
that the manual focus collar is where you normally want to "park" your
left hand, and it's quite sensitive, so that if you're not careful,
after you focus you can slightly de-focus while taking the shot. But
I'd noticed this tendency right away and I (mostly) make sure I'm not
accidentally dragging this ring almost imperceptibly.
There are more formal tests I can do with the E-3, and I also suspect
that part of the problem is that you need to turn off all the other
focus points as well as restrict the centre focus point to its narrowest
angle of acceptance (setting AF Sensitivity to "Small") in order to get
the most accurate focus.
Of course, I'm sure it's possible that some people got "lemons"
nevertheless. Pretty much every shooter I know has such a horror story,
either from days of yore or from the digi revolution -- my buddy Royce
has some *very* choice things to say about some of his recent Canon
acquisitions, for example. Seems like us consumers are a finicky lot. ;-)
