It's easy to speculate, but we are missing crucial information, sales by
model and sales vs. plan.
If, as I suspect, the 5D has been a great sales and profit success for
Canon, I don't see them messing with success too much, just tuning it to
the competition. Also, going down in price too much could cut into small
sensor model sales.
I wouldn't be surprised to see much the same camera with live view and
"dust buster" additions.
Although the sensor is excellent as it is, 21 mp in the 1Ds III leaves
room to go up and the 1D III is for a very different market. Given that
they need a new sensor and support system for live view anyway, I'd
guess we will see something like 14-16 mp and the DIGIC III processor
with 14 bit A/D converter. And higher isos, of course.
Silly as it is, megapixel count is still a huge deal in marketing, so
I'd guess they will open up a little gap over the D3/300. Going from
12.7 to say 15.4 mp is only a theoretical resolution increase of 10%,
not really noticeable in real world images.
But an increase from 12 to 15 mp may be worth sales improvement in the
hundreds of thousands of units.
