Great points made by all. Interesting to me at least that one loses
resolution by a factor of two
in the near limit DOF by focusing at infinity in lieu of the hyperfocal
distance but gain resolution by a factor of 6 for distant objects.
I think that approach would be a disaster for bugs eye view where the
foreground must be quite sharp but focusing a bit past the hyperfocal
distance or infinity may be advantageous for some landscapes.

It was also nice to see in print (at least for me) that the edges of
the COC are quite distinct for the OOF effects but fuzzy for
diffraction effects. Probably everyone knew that intuitively. Thus
when I take a couple shots that require a very large dof and worry
about diffraction softening the image I still most often prefer the
smaller aperture shot.

I wish their were an easy way to achieve a T-S lens for OM and the
above worries would largely evaporate.

Perhaps a future generation DSLR will have in camera stacking for
large dof combined with hdr. I bet it will happen.

Oh, I bet Chuck may be interested in scanning the latter parts of the
article on focusing screens. I bet this is another can of worms.
