I suspect that it is true for most/all. Sharpening should be the
last possible process in the entire imaging chain. However, what
happens is that the sharpening is being applied prior to
post-processing. By keeping the file as close to sensor-output, we
are able to apply noise-reduction or other cleanup techniques later
on.
What I wrote is VERY specific to the E-1. Also, if you shoot RAW, and
process the file with RawShooter (R.I.P.) you can denoise the image
remarkably well.
