Those look like what we call Oregon - Douglas Fir? A penetrating
sealer should do - if they haven't been attacked after 50 years you
may not need anything nasty but a precoat of a borer treatment may be
wise. I'm fond of Danish oil as it penetrates, proofs and hardens
softwoods, enhancing the reddish colour.
