As I mentioned - just got back from the Nikon pre-launch lunch (very
nice thank you).
Picked up the D3 with 14-24mm f2.8 AF-S lens on it (which means it
defaulted automatically from FX to DX format, went out on the hotel
balcony and ripped off some shots of the passing proletariat below at
which point, the Oz marketing manager asked - "You put a card in that
didn't you?!" with a slight hint of betrayal (mine) in his voice.
"Sorry, it's a pre-production model so I'll have to ask you to format
it." Damn. I shoulda been more covert. It's a big lump anybut and
covered in buttons - it's got an 'OK' button but I couldn't find the
'Any' button.
N are making truly extravagant claims about the high ISO performance
- time will tell but the 11fps in DX is scary (someone had left it on
CH - continuous, high) and the histograms looked sweet - nicely
kicked to the right in 'P' mode. The D300 seems chunkier than the
D200 but it was wearing the big, new, fat Macro lens so I may have
been fooled. Impressive beast but. They are keeping the D200 alive at
a price point of about 2/3rds the D300 I suspect. Same for the D2x.
One interesting comment was that N regard this all as 'old school'
and are planning something special. Hmmmm.
The P5100 was there too but still no RAW mode. Foolish.
After misbehaving, I shut up, ate my lunch and developed a nice red
wine headache. They seem to have forgiven me.
