About materials to work with... well we architects aren't artists, but
come close in some domains, and some are really artists. Just to come
to the point, instruments DO matter.
I am teaching sketching to young (18-21y) people, who have learned
nothing about drawing the last 5 years, except some "technical
drawing" which really is just mathematics.
I always start of the first two months with just two pencils: a
steadler B and 2B, but after that I ask the students to go out and try
different materials, pencils, fill leads in different sizes,
ballpoint, etc... It is really awkward how a pencil or ballpoint or
marker can influence you, and the way you think and act (ever read
Donald Schön's the reflective practitioner?)
I once became almost mad in Japan when I couldn't find my favourite
"Pentel super fine point permanent MF 50 Japan" marker. Hey, they were
made in Japan, but weren't sold there? I think equipment does matter,
as well as how it looks (on topic now: I think the OM series + lenses
are real beauties, and I enjoy them simply better.)
It is al about the fact to find a balance, and to be able to forget
about the instruments.
Trouble with new instruments is that they have to be "learned".
Advantage is that you might be surprised, and find a new instrument.
Instruments have to be trusted, as good old friends, and in ample
supply. (yes I have stocked up on these markers).
So, the brush, ..., etc, do matter, but to matter they also have to be
USED, and that's something I have my doubts about reading some reviews
and forums.
Iwert.
