I wish photographers would let this straw man die. It makes us look like
uneducated imbeciles. Artists DO care about materials and equipment they use
and they DO talk about them. When I was in art school the professors and the
students who were majoring in painting were often very passionate about what
kind of brushes to use and what brands of paint were best. Favorite brushes
were Windsor-Newton series 7 for watercolor, and Windsor-Newton hoghair for
oil painting. Windsor-Newton Professional Watercolor paints were considered
the best, and I heard a professor upbraid a student once for using a
student-grade paint instead of the rather costly W-N pro paints. He told her
that she was there to become a professional artist and if she didn't want to
make the commitment to professionalism then she did not belong at the
university's art program. He suggested she transfer to the business
department. The professor was a nationally known artist who is represented
by a gallery in New York. The oil painting students and teachers preferred
Windsor-Newton professional oils if they were short on money, and Old
Holland, Sennelier, Gamblin, or Schminke if they could afford them.

Professional artists most certainly talk about paints, brushes, canvas
types, etc. and as noted above some are psychotically passionate about them,
just as some photographers are about camera equipment, films, papers, inks,
etc. Any photographer who tries to tell you equipment doesn't matter is dead
wrong and any who tries to say "real artists" don't worry about such things
is a fool who doesn't have a clue what he's talking about. By the way,
photography IS real art and photographers are "Real Artists".
